Career Fairs

Career Fairs

Eighth Grade Career Exploration

Each year, eighth grade students from seven area schools - Bellwood-Antis, Claysburg-Kimmel, Hollidaysburg Area, Spring Cove, Williamsburg, Tyrone, and Altoona-Johnstown Diocese - participate in a Career Fair in which representatives from area businesses come to the schools on a day designated by each individual school to impart career information. Most schools create panels to interact with large groups of students, A couple still have business people visit the classrooms to explain what the career is, what level of education/training is required to perform the career duties and how much the career pays in the local job market. When the Career Fair is completed, students are required to write an essay about a particular career that caught their attention. The guidance counselors at each school rate the essays on content and overall interest and then submit the best three to the BASICS Steering Committee. The writer of the winning essay is invited to the Chamber Breakfast Club in May (along with their parents and their guidance counselors) to receive a certificate and a $50 gift card.

BASICS / Rotary Career Fair

At the end of April each year, all high school sophomores at ten local schools - Altoona Area, Bellwood-Antis, Bishop Guilfoyle, Central, Claysburg-Kimmel, Glendale, Hollidaysburg Area, Northern Bedford, Tyrone, and Williamsburg - are invited to participate in a Career Fair held at the Blair County Convention Center. Students can choose from among nearly 80 different career categories to help them to better understand what those careers are about and the type of preparation required to pursue them. Prior to the Career Fair, each student designates four career interests and then is scheduled to meet with businesses and organizations representing those interests. Each career visit takes twenty minutes to complete. The event is co-sponsored by the BASICS Commitee and the six Blair County Rotary Clubs: Rotary Club of Altoona, Sunrise Rotary Club of Altoona, Tyrone Rotary, Hollidaysburg Rotary, Morrisons Cove Rotary, Claysburg Rotary. The BASICS / Rotary Career Fair is considered the step on the career pathway just prior to Career Shadowing.

While the in-person BASICS/Rotary Career Fair scheduled for April 2021 is cancelled, the Career Fair Subcommittee is working with past Career Fair presenters to prepare short videos to share with all participating schools. These presenters play an integral role in helping area sophomores explore the opportunities awaiting them upon graduation. If you or your business want to participate in this video project and have an impact on tomorrow's workforce, contact Nicole Zernick at or 814.505.1283 for more information.
